One of the most popular landmarks in Madrid is the magnificent Plaza de Cibeles. The plaza is centered around a sculptured fountain of a Roman goddess riding a chariot. The fountain has been a part of Madrid for a couple of hundred years, since 1782. More recently, the Real Madrid soccer team has adopted the plaza as a meeting place. Around the Plaza de Cibeles are several important buildings, most notably the Communications Palace. At night, both the Plaza and the surrounding buildings are illuminated in a dazzling display.
