From the lagoon, St. Mark's Campanile and the Doge's Palace serenely point the way to the Bridge of Sighs. Stretching across the Rio di Palazzo, the bridge connects the palace to a former prison. Said to have gained its name from the sighs of prisoners as they crossed, the brilliant 17th century limestone shines to this day. Perhaps better known, is the Venetian legend promising lovers eternal happiness together if they kiss in a gondola at sunset beneath the bridge. This magnificent structure invites everyone from lovers to history enthusiasts. Indeed, this beautiful example of artistry, skill, and craftsmanship is not to be missed.
