First exchange only enough money at the airport to pay for your taxi to Copacabana and Impenema,(around)$40.00, the cost should be about 30 reals or $US20.00. I was in Copacabana, during carnival 2010 and used the Metro subway to get to the sambadrome for about rs$2.40 when going downtown, I use the subway during daytime and a taxi, as night time approached for safety. The Taxi is safe and very cheap. A safety tip for americans, is to leave your white socks home. Wear sandles with no socks and pack light, with only a carry on.
