This is because in the olden days (even till today in some places and cities in Thailand), Thai people uses their left hand to wash their buttocks after taking a poo-poo. May sound funny, but true. :)

It is very easy to communicate with most everyone speaking English. But, as a general rule, taxi drivers do not speak English. Therefore, it is wise to bring along a map with your destination circled for the taxi driver.
